“…grace that is reaching more and more people…” Let’s think about that for a minute. Is grace contagious? Does it spread from person to person? Maybe. We certainly know that we adults are influenced by our friends. We tend to like the same kinds of things and enjoy the same kinds of activities as our friends.
So perhaps, by intentionally placing ourselves and our families in the presence of others in whom God’s loving grace abounds, we become more ready to receive and accept His grace into our own hearts.
This brings me to Item # 8 in the Ten Predictors of Spiritual Health in Kids from the Jana Magruder book, Nothing Less. Item # 8 reads: Child connected with several adults at church who intentionally invested time in them.
So, it is important for your kids to be influenced by adults outside of your family, but within the church who want to invest time in them. How can you arrange that?
The easiest way to do this is to send the kids to Life Group classes on a regular basis. Kids who show up regularly on Sunday mornings form trusting relationships with their Life Group leaders. They feel safe and comfortable in that environment and are open to the influence that those loving Christian adults have on their developing understanding of Bible truths.
How else can you support your kids in forming relationships with adults in the church? Volunteer and bring the kids with you. Whether they’re helping sort school supplies or clothes for Backpacks and Bluejeans or helping pass out napkins and plates for a church-wide dinner, they will have the opportunity to connect with other adults who are also serving.
I remember going with my Mom as a preteen and young teenager during summer vacations to help with our church thrift shop. I had fun looking at the clothes, trying on some of them and helping sort and price items. But more importantly, I enjoyed the feeling of being a junior member of that community of Christian women who gathered together to work and pray and share together. As I grew older, those relationships continued to grow and they helped strengthen my developing faith.
We have an event coming up on August 6th, 7th and 8th that will give your kids opportunities to work alongside other families doing missionary work in our local and nearby communities. Sign up today for Family Mission Rockport. We will meet at the church early in the morning each day for breakfast, go out in groups to work together helping people in need and return for lunch and a brief devotion time before going home for naps. You can register online or at the booth that will be set up in the hallway outside the sanctuary for the next two Sundays.
When school starts, there will be a number of opportunities for kids to connect with adults. There will be Wednesday night Missions and Music classes, Children’s Church during the latter half of the 11:00 service and possibly a new Kids’ Bible Study group.
Let me know if you have any questions about these opportunities for your kids to connect with adults in our church. As always, I look forward to talking with you and helping in any way I can as you go about the challenging and rewarding job of being a parent!
