May God, the source of hope, fill you with all joy and peace by means of your faith in Him, so that your hope will continue to grow by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

pray that, as we enter the second month in our Post-Harvey world, you and your family are beginning to find a “new normal” life, one that is filled with the hope, joy and peace that comes from God. If your current living space is anything like mine, it is a strange environment filled with things that belong to other people. There’s nothing much to call “mine” and the things that are mine are strewn about in varying states of disrepair or disarray. It is hard to find peace when one’s whole way of life has been disturbed.
Yet I find now that it is the little things that matter. Drinking my morning coffee, steaming and fresh in my favorite ceramic mug that survived Harvey, brings me hope. Wearing my favorite comfy t-shirts and shorts that I wore around the house where I lived before the storm bring me peace. Cooking favorite foods alongside my husband brings us both joy. And establishing some new routines in my new temporary home is comforting.
What are the little things that you can do for your young child so that he or she feels comforted?
Simple things like singing familiar songs, reading favorite stories and playing games that you played before the storm can bring your child comfort and a sense of security.
Go places that you enjoyed in your Pre-Harvey lives. Not every place is open in town, but some are. Personally, I wept tears of joy when HEB opened after the storm and I could walk up and down the familiar aisles, choosing this type of bread and that package of meat. Take your kids shopping to the old familiar stores in town. Go to the library together and spend some time browsing the books and enjoying the children’s area.
Bring the kids to church. I love seeing the smiles on the faces of the young children when they see their friends and teachers in their old familiar classrooms in the early childhood department at FBC. Children who might have been reluctant to leave their parents before the storm are so happy to see their friends now that they rush right into the classrooms and go straight to their favorite activity areas.
On October 15th, Life Group classes begin again. Kids and teachers will be reunited and we will get back to the business of learning, praying and playing together every Sunday morning.
On October 18th, our Wednesday evening Missions and Music program begins again. We have classes for all ages, from babies on up. So come to Bible study and bring the kids on Wednesday evenings. You will find comfort, hope and joy and you study God’s Word and learn more about His amazing grace.
Let me know what I can to do help you and your family as we go through these challenging times together. Give me a call or stop by the early childhood office to chat. I would love to see you.
